2nd Anglo Dutch War, 1665
The Duke of York and Albany's Maritime Regiment of Foot took part in its first battle when the English and Dutch fleets met off Lowestoft at the onset of the Anglo Dutch War. Both Fleets were incapable of further action following a fierce confrontation. The Regiment went on to become the Royal Marines.

Musketeer Abram Hartley served in Erle's Regiment. The Regiment forded the Boyne under heavy fire and found itself in a bog and impeded by ditches and high hedges. Despite stubborn resistance the attack succeeded. In 1726 Hartley became an In-pensioner in Chelsea Hospital
